MULTICULTURAL EDUCATION IN THE UNITED STATES AND CANADA:
THE IMPORTANCE OF NATIONAL POLICIES
Multiculturalism in our country is very important in my opinion. Unfortunately it has not and still does not get implemented the best it could. I believe multiculturalism should be more inclusive. I believe this because I grew up in small farming towns with the population being middle class white people. I don’t remember any serious discussions on any of the beliefs or thoughts on including everyone into society or any move towards multiculturalism. I graduated high school in 1999 and these topics were beginning to be taken serious by school officials. I believe that, as discussed in many of our classes, it is up to each generation to push forward the positives in teaching and continue to improve, and to learn from negative experiences. As mentioned in the article it is up to the education system to continue to improve the country as a whole and to educate our children on acceptance of different cultures. This is important as the students will carry on the ideals, morals and beliefs into their future and this includes multiculturalism. I believe that an important topic in this is to remind the students to be open to new thoughts, beliefs and morals’ while explaining that they don’t have to agree with others but to be open to listening and respecting others, as it is impossible to completely agree with everyone at on every topic.
